FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What are your cut off scores/performance criteria for the USMLE?We prefer 80 or higher on each step of USMLE 1 & 2 with no more than 2 attempts to pass. You must take and pass step 3 before you can advance to PG-2 level in our program. There is a 6 month grace period to complete it if you haven't passed by end of PG-1 year.
Do you require prior psychiatry experience or other clinical experience in the USA? For international graduates one year of post graduate experience in a psychiatric setting, either as a house officer in another country, or clinical research, externship/observorshipin USA is required. Some portion of this may be excused for other clinical/research work(neurosciences) in US, but generally the more psych experience the better.
What visas will you sponsor? US citizen or permanent or J-1 visa only, no H-1B.
Any other requirements? You must have a driver's license or obtain one quickly upon starting, as our sponsoringinstitution involves 3 hospitals within a 5 mile radius and driving between campusesis very common.
How do I apply and what is your deadline? We accept applications only via ERAS, deadline Dec. 31of this year. A complete applicationincluding USMLE transcript via ERAS must be received by then. We expect a Dean's letter and 3 other letters of reference, as well as a personal statement explaining your interest inpsychiatry.
When are interviews scheduled? We generally interview from November thruough early February. Tuesday and Thursday arethe preferred days for general psychiatry interviews.
How many positions do you offer/ do you offer pre-Match contracts? We offer 3 general psychiatry (4 year) positions and 2 medicine-psychiatry (5 year) positions each year via the NRMP and do not typically offerpre-Match contracts to anyone. You can apply to both programs (separate program ID numbers in NRMP.) Dr. Jame Griffith is the medicine-psychiatry director.
