Applicants for the Residency Training Program are considered on the
basis of the following criteria:
1. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or be able to document valid
immigration status required to be eligible for employment and
enrollment in an extended medical education program at the
University of Mississippi Medical Center.
2. The applicant must meet or exceed minimal federal and state
statutory and/or regulatory requirements for medical licensure (full
or temporary).
3. The applicant must exhibit sufficient command of the English
language to facilitate accurate, unimpeded communication with
patients and instructors.
4. Foreign medical graduate applicants must produce a valid ECFMG
(Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)
certificate.
5. The applicant must provide verifiable documentation of previous
medical training which must include, but not be limited to,
information from medical schools and graduate medical
educational programs which should detail the training experiences
and the past performance and professional integrity of the
applicant, and relevant information from the training directors of
any previous residency program(s) attended by the applicant.
6. The applicant applying at the second postgraduate year or above
must have satisfied the training objectives cited by the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
and by the Department for reaching that level of training.
7. The applicant must provide at least three letters of professional
reference, preferably all from clinicians in the United States who
can be contacted by the Residency Training Program.

8. The applicant must be of good character and of sufficient
mental/physical health to meet the requirements of the psychiatry
residency training program and not endanger the health and
welfare of patients, staff, or self.
9. The applicant must show an interest in and an aptitude for
Psychiatry as a branch of the Medical Sciences, as well as the
intellectual capability to acquire, assimilate, and appropriately
utilize medical and psychiatric training.
10. No applicant will be refused consideration for the Residency
Training Program based on race, color, gender, religion, creed,
national origin, marital status, veteran status, age, or disability as
defined by law, so long as the applicant meets the above criteria.
