Interview information:

We conduct our interviews during the months of November, December, and January.

We have specific interviews dates set aside and we have a team of faculty who conduct all of our interviews.

Additional information for international applicants:
Experience: Experience in the specialty is desirable as is some experience in the United States. We will accept experience in clinical research, externships and observerships in psychiatry. We do not offer externships or observerships at our University. Applications without U.S. experience will be accepted by recent medical school graduates (those graduating within the past two years) and from candidates who have received residency training in psychiatry in international programs.

Scores: We prefer passing scores of 80 or above, and we generally do not accept more than 3 attempts on any of the step examinations. However, scores are one component of the application and may be influenced by number of attempts on an examination and the clinical experiences of the applicant.

We sponsor both H1-B and J-1 visas. However, it is our policy that anyone who wishes to enter training on an H1-B visa should pass their Step 3 examination before we submit our Match rank list, or be willing to enter the program on a J1 visa. We have the right to limit the number of H1-B visas we will offer each year.
Our deadline for applications is December 1; however, we will close applications once we have filled our interview schedule.

If you have additional questions, please contact the program. E-mail communication is preferred and you will receive a prompt response.

What we look for in a candidate: Special attention is paid to applicants with a broad range of prior work, education, and extracurricular experiences. Applicants who take initiative for their own learning and pursue scholarly and volunteer activities beyond program requirements are especially valued. The capacity to be reflective about oneself and one’s interactions with others, openness to constructive criticism, and a willingness to tolerate anxiety that is inherent in the learning process is essential.
Sub-internships can be helpful for you to learn about our program and for us to learn about you. These must be arranged in advance to accommodate your and our schedule. See contact information to follow.
Application process – We accept applications through ERAS. After the ERAS system opens, we screen applicants and invite interviews. Deadline for applications is December 15, 2009. Interviews will be held on Mondays between mid October until early February before the NRMP rank deadline.
The following materials should be submitted by all applicants for PGY-1 positions:• The ERAS Common Application.• A one- to two-page personal statement, which should include your reasons for choosing psychiatry as a specialty.• Your curriculum vitae• A minimum of three letters of reference from faculty or professional staff at your medical school or at hospitals where you have worked• Your official medical/osteopathic school transcript• A Dean’s Letter• USMLE or COMLEX Scores
If you are invited for an interview, please plan your travel schedule to include dinner and socializing on Sunday evening with residents, followed by interviews with faculty and residents on Monday morning, lunch with residents, then a tour of Salt Lake City neighborhoods and training sites.
Please remember that we must have results from USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CS and CK before the rank deadline, therefore, please schedule your exams well in advance so that you will have your score results back before the NRMP rank deadline.
For additional information, please contact Kevin Ostler at kevin.ostler@hsc.utah.edu or (801) 581-4096.
