Applicant Qualifications
Must be a graduate or expect to graduate soon from a U.S. or Canadian Allopathic OR Osteopathic Medical School; or
Must be a graduate of an international Medical School
Must be able to prove legal ability to work in the United States. We are not able to sponsor any type of visas
While there is no absolute cut off for USMLE scores or number of attempts to pass, we will give preference to applicants with scores above 80 and no more than two attempts
COMLEX in lieu of USMLE is accepted for Osteopathic applicants
There is also no absolute cutoff for year of graduation, however, the State of Arizona requires you to have completed the USMLE within 7 years of graduation in order to obtain a license
ECFMG Certification (or in progress)
IMG’s are expected to have 6-12 months recent US medical experience, which includes but is not limited to direct patient care, an externship or observership, education about patient care or clinical research in the U.S. (A significant portion of this experience must be relevant to psychiatry, i.e., involvement with psychiatry research, trained or practiced psychiatry in home country or externship experience in the U.S.)

How to Apply

Currently there are 20 positions in our fully-accredited, four-year Psychiatry Residency Program as we have increased our PGY-1 complement to 5. The manageable size of our program fosters a genuine spirit of cooperation, participation and collegiality between residents and faculty to ensure an optimal learning experience. Banner Good Samaritan participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

PGY-1
PGY-1 applicants should submit their application packet through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Upon review of completed applications, we will contact suitable candidates to arrange a visit with us. In consideration of their travel expenses, we will include a flyer listing hotels in the general area who offer reduced rates to the applicants we will be interviewing. Our interview day is personalized to include a series of one-on-one interviews with the Program Director, key faculty and residents, lunch and a tour of the Banner Good Samaritan campus.

Information for Foreign Medical Graduate Applicants

Residency applications are accepted from Foreign Medical Graduates, and the following requirements apply:

ECFMG Certified (prior to application)
J1 Visa Only (No H1 visas)
Applications accepted through ERAS only. (Please do not send paper applications.)
No minimum board scores. No maximum number of attempts.
Three letters of recommendation, preferably from psychiatrists in the U.S. (Letters should describe relevant clinical information.)
Experience in psychiatry, e.g., trained and/or practiced psychiatry in home country; involved with psychiatry research in U.S.; externship experience in U.S.
Recent dates of graduation preferred. (5 years or less for graduates with special training in psychiatry.) (5 years or less from completion of residency.)
Deadline for application is December 1.

International Medical Graduates

International Medical Graduates are welcome to apply to the Program. International Medical Graduates must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) located at 3624 Marketing Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-2685. Phone: (215) 386-5900. We will sponsor J1 Visas if necessary.
The Program reviews all applications and selects the most qualified candidates for an interview. The Program receives many more qualified applications than can be interviewed. Various factors affect the decision of whether to interview a candidate, such as clinical experience and interest in psychiatry, medical school experiences, USMLE scores, and letters of recommendation.
To be considered for an interview, applicants must have
had some clinical experience in psychiatry
graduated from medical school within the past 10 years
passed both USMLE steps 1 and 2
have an excellent proficiency in English.
Beyond these criteria, the Program prefers applicants who passed the USMLE without any prior failures, graduated from medical school within the past 5 years, have U.S. clinical experience in psychiatry, and have research experience in psychiatry. Applicants are invited for an interview through e-mail.The application deadline is December 1, 2009.
