If more than 5 years have elapsed since graduation from medical school, USMLE Step 3, (OR) a full medical license in a US jurisdiction is required.
The following criteria are highly desirable but are not required for acceptance:

B. If graduated from medical school more than 5 years ago, continuous clinical experience since graduation, preferably some in the US, and/or postgraduate training in psychiatry.
C. Passed USMLE Step 3

When do you start accepting applications?
We accept applications only through ERAS. We start interviewing in September.
What are the cut off dates for graduation from medical school?
We do not have a cut off date for graduation. However, preference is given to more recent graduates (unless you have previous postgraduate training in psychiatry). If you graduated from an US medical school more than 4 years ago, you will need to be eligible for full medical license in the District of Columbia (since this will be required to join any residency program in DC). If you graduated from a foreign medical school more than 5 years ago, you need to have passed USMLE Step 3 by February 1st of the year of the match in order to be ranked.
What is your Accreditation status?
Saint Elizabeths Hospital Psychiatry Residency Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Currently our status is “Continued Accreditation”.
Where can I get more information about your program including curriculum, faculty, benefits and other information?
Our website: www.stelizabethshospitalresidency.org provides more information about our program.
Do you offer prematch positions?
Usually, all 8 of our PGY-I positions are filled through the NRMP. For exceptional candidates, however, we may consider a request for prematch acceptance.
What Visas do you sponsor?
In the past we have sponsored J-1 and on rare occasions, H-1 visas. We may consider sponsoring H-1 visa if the candidate is exceptional, and can provide written documentation of having passed USMLE Step 3 before January 31 of the year of match.

The Psychiatry Residency Program of the George Washington University Medical Center solicits applications from international medical graduates, as well as graduates of United States medical schools. In selecting IMG applicants, we prefer a combined Step 1 USMLE score above 200, although other personal and professional experiences and competencies are weighed when examination scores are lower. Applicants are rarely selected with USMLE scores below 190 on Step I and Step II examinations. Competency in the English language and American culture is an important consideration. However, no US clinical experience is required. Based upon initial application materials, applicants are selected for personal interviews and final considerations for a position. Six residents are selected each year through the annual Match process. The PGY-II class is then expanded to six or seven residents each year through additional recruitment at the PGY-II level.
Visas accepted for Graduate Medical Education at GWU:
J-1 (Exchange Visitor Visa) sponsored through ECFMG. Application is processed by the GME Office. Note: The J-1 must be a clinical J-1 and not a research J-1. J-1 visas require the resident, upon completion of training, to return to his/her home country for two years before applying for permanent residency or return to the U.S. for other purpose
Permanent Resident
Green Card Visas
GWU does NOT accept / sponsor:H-1B,O,F-1
* USMLE scores should be 190 or higher on the three-digit scale for Step-1 and Step-2. Compelling applications will however, be considered on a provisional basis.

Application and Contact Information
Each year, the Residency Training Program accepts applications for six PGY-1 positions. All applications for the Residency Training Program must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications are accepted starting in September and are desired by November 1. Interviews are by invitation only and are required. They will be scheduled at the mutual convenience of the applicant and the Department of Psychiatry between November 1st and January 31st. When interviewed, please plan on spending a full day at our program.
Although we have no absolute minimum requirements for USMLE scores, the average applicant invited to interview scored approximately 205 on their Step 1. We strongly prefer that applicants pass their USMLE Step 1 & 2 within two attempts. We are generally looking for applicants who have graduated from medical school within the past ten years, and who have approximately two years of U.S. clinical experience (either a third and fourth year of American Medical School or approximately two years of U.S. clinical experience for International Medical Graduates). All applicants for a residency position must be (pending) graduates of an LCME-accredited medical school, an AOA-accredited medical school or a medical school listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools. The Program Director, or his/her designee, will evaluate and select the candidates he/she believes to be most qualified for the positions available within the training program and select which candidates to interview. Credentials considered in this selection process will include:
Global performance in medical school, including: a. Dean's letter b. Class rank c. Transcript d. Continuity of medical education
Personal Statement/Motivation for Psychiatry
USMLE or COMLEX examination scores
Letters of Recommendation
ECFMG Certification, if applicable. For International Medical Graduates, we will accept only a J-1 visa sponsored by the ECFMG.
