Psychiatry Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Do you accept paper applications?
A1. For PGY-1 all applications must be through ERAS. The department can be flexible regarding PGY-2 applications.
Q2. Is there a minimum USMLE score?
A2. The committee expects USMLE scores of 80 or higher on each step in selecting for interviews. Number of attempts may not exceed 3 on any step.
Q3. Do you accept IMG's or FMG's ?
A3. Yes, we have a diverse group of residents and follow a policy of equal opportunity.
Q4. Does Jackson Memorial Medical Center sponsor H-1 or J-1 visas?
A4. Jackson Memorial Hospital provides J-1 visas for residents.
Q5. What is the deadline for applications?
A5. The earlier the better, but after December 15th, invitations for interviews will be limited.
Q6. Is there a requirement for U.S. experience?
A6. Yes, the requirement is for one full year of U.S. hospital clinical experience. Most usually, this is in the form of externships, rotations, observerships or similar activities involving daily patient contact in an inpatient setting. Experience in an allied field may be considered, such as nursing, physician assistant, mental health or health technician. This requirement is firm due to the high number of applications received.
Q7. How many positions are available?
A7. Generally, we take 10 PGY-1 residents through the Match and a variable number of PGY-2's outside the Match. The number of PGY-2 positions depends on the total number of slots available and changes from year to year.
Q8. Is there a limit for number of years since medical school graduation?
A8. Each applicant will be considered individually in this respect. Activities since graduation will be considered.
